Gostar's new star

Go Star's new star - Tom Gazzard
How Go Star found the new R600 hot shot

Go Star Racing was created back in 1999 by a few keen enthusiastic bikers, with the aim of building a road and race track based club. In its short history the club has grown considerably, the club is run purely by volunteers who give up their free time just for the love of motorcycles. We work on the theory members will only get something out of the club if they are willing to put something in. We are not a rich club, do not have the resources to provide bikes, brolly girls, basically we have bugger all cash but we all pull our knowledge and limited resources together and help each other, with the ultimate goal of helping someone with talent a helping hand up into the racing world.

Running any club has its ups and downs and Go Star is no exception and with most of its members racing or track day addicts the road side of the club has received little attention and has faded to the background. For 2005 the decision was taken to further improve the club and its image we would concentrate on where most of its members interests lay, Racing and Trackdays.

It has always been the club's goals to one day have a rider at MRO, national and International level. Most of its members like many racers will never achieve this but are willing to help others by putting something back into the sport that has given so many of us pleasure over many years.

First we have to find a super talented rider !

To achieve this in 2005 we are trying to work with some of the top UK track day organisers in promoting the track day organisers and the club, speaking to the riders and talent spotting and doing what we enjoy, riding bikes.

Tom Gazzard started riding Trackdays for a bit of fun, one of those things most bikers want to do, see what it's like to be Rossi for a day!

Having some very experienced racers in the club some of them have also instructed at Trackdays and can easily spot the different levels of riders, from the novice, fast and damn right dangerous !

This is where Tom Gazzard grabbed our attention. After a brief chat with him we realized with his track experience (none) and the bike he was on (which was an old steel framed CBR600 and not in very good a nick) the lap times he was doing meant Tom had some talent and the club could help him achieve his goal to race. He wanted to race, asked for our help and went on to win his first ever race and the following three. I am not saying Go Star was purely responsible for his success but the advice and help he received no doubt helped.

Anyone who has started racing will know how daunting it is, not slept for the last 4 days, arriving at the circuit not knowing anyone or what to do and that feeling you're the fastest thing on a bike ever, is slowly slipping away when you see some of the other bikes you will be racing against. Pure fear !!

We help take away most of those worries by working as a team and working together which leaves the rider more relaxed. Help can come in the form of organising and sharing a garage, sharing tools etc. even the simple things that make a difference, like taking the tyre warmers off before a race, this can make all the difference. We also have some very experienced racers who are always on hand to give advise, from suspension set up, what gearing to use etc etc. Basically if someone wants something done all they have to do is ask we will always do our very best to help them out and have fun along the way.
