MRO Brands Weymouth podium

Bemsee/MRO Brands Indy 26-27th September 2009
Peter Baker takes Champion of Brands title

The British Motorcycle Racing Club ran another superbly organised and complete package of racing at Brands Hatch last weekend, and as always the riders responded with some outstanding individual performances to entertain the spectators. The three Morello Powerbike races were fiercely contested with Mike Goodfellow taking two wins, Peter Baker a first and two seconds and Andy Weymouth a second and a third. Lee Keeble and Oli Henderson finished with a well-earned third apiece. The Centenary Champion Of Brands was won by Peter Baker, with Mike Goodfellow second and Andy Weymouth in third (See full report below).

In the 250MZ class the podium places were dominated by Dean Stimpson 3 wins and a second, Chris Rogers 1 win, 2 seconds and a third, and Andy Saunders a second and two thirds.

Triumph Triples saw Tommy Dale unbeatable with three wins, Alex Olsen three second places and Reece Rothwell three third spots.

YPM's produced three wins for Michael Smith, a win and three second places for Pat Herron, four thirds for Dan Wright and a second for Jamie Cooper.

Supermono provided Mark Lawes with two wins, two second spots for Mark George, and a third place each for Michael Payne and Aaron Easter.

Stocksport 600 was run over three races, two of which were won by Max Hunt, the other race winner was a rapidly improving Danny Buchan who also took a third place. Ben Grindrod scored two seconds and a third and Stuart Wickens a second and a third.

Open Rookies saw Daniel Johnson on the podium in all four races taking two wins and two second places, Jason Byard also climbed the podium in every race with a win two seconds and a third. James Phare took a top step in the first race and Aaron Hoar with two and Ross Dunning with one took the final places.

Superteens was well contested as usual but Alex Vella made the running with two wins and two thirds. Chrissy Rouse, another one to watch, looked like being the "bridesmaid" until the last race when she produced a very competitive ride to take a well earned first win to go with her trio of second places, Jack Keen took the remaining top step, with Luke Helm and Ty Jones a third place each.

Supersport 600 threw up some interesting performances with Tony Coombs improving on his second place in the first race with two wins in the later events. Max Hunt had a solo win and Peter Molloy and Stuart Wickens took two seconds, James Wainwright two thirds and Sarah Jordan a third place.

With only two rounds to go in The Centenary Year the following Championships have already been decided, but I'm sure that does not mean that the winning riders will not be pushing hard to win and finish the season as true champions. I have yet to attend another UK bike series that can compare with the timing and content of this club's meetings, and although the majority of riders are unknown outside of these events the competition is never the less just as fierce and sometimes more exciting than the more prestigious organisations provide. Here's to next year and the revamped classes.

WEYMOUTH CONSISTENT AT BRANDS
MRO - Champion of Brands 26/27-09-09

Andy Weymouth on a Yamaha R1 had a good outing at The Bemsee/MRO meeting run on The Indy Circuit at Brands Hatch last weekend. He took a second, a third and a fourth place in the MRO Morello Powerbike class and a third place in The Centenary Champion of Brands event.

He qualified on Saturday in 6th position, which put him on the 2nd row of the grid for the first of the Powerbike races.

As the lights went out Weymouth got a good start and by the end of the 1st lap he passed Max Hunt on the Race Lab Yamaha R1, and Barry Chapman on the SDC Yamaha R1 into 4th position. But by this time the front runners had pulled out an unassailable lead, and unable to close the gap Andy finished an uneventful race in 4th place, 8.095sec behind the winner Mike Goodfellow on the Carbontek Suzuki 1000 GSXR.

For Sunday race 8 Weymouth again made a flying start and by lap 2 had again overtaken Max Hunt as well as Lee Keeble on his Yamaha R1 into 4th place. He was vying for position with Barry Chapman, waiting for his chance to pass and on lap 6 he made his move to pass Barry into 3rd, and then set about catching Peter Baker on the Morello Roofing Suzuki GSXR. However Baker managed to maintain his position and Andy crossed the line in hard fought 3rd place 3.582sec behind double winner Mike Goodfellow.

Another good start for Race 18 saw Weymouth pass Lee Keeble into 2nd at the end of lap 1, and with Baker having pulled out a substantial lead he began the almost impossible task of reducing the deficit. He was consistently catching the leader lap by lap, but pushing hard he engaged neutral going into Paddock Hill Bend, but somehow managed to keep it under control. He then lost 4th gear but still continued to catch Baker and by the penultimate lap was only 0.5 sec behind. The race for the finish was truly under way and at Clearways there was only a bikes length between them, at Clark the were nose to tail and as they made the last dash to the line it was Baker that managed to take the win by 0.178sec.

In his efforts to catch the eventual race winner Andy Weymouth was the only rider to exceed a 90mph lap which he achieved on lap 14, at 90.250mph.. The pace set by the duo left the 3rd place man some 20 secs behind.

Weymouth qualified for The Centenary Champion of Brands in 4th position and as the lights went out he made a good start, but on the 1st lap lost a place to Lee Keeble. Fighting with Keeble and Chapman he set about catching Mike Goodfellow who had lost the lead to Peter Baker and the contest continued with each rider looking to pass but none wanting to give ground. Andy continued to pressurise Keeble until the last lap when he managed to overtake the Yamaha rider into 3rd position and finished the race behind the eventual winner Peter Baker and 2nd place Mike Goodfellow.

"I enjoyed the racing" said Andy after the event, "but I think I could have done better. Some new tyres would have been useful but financially this was not possible, and the loss of 4th gear plus selecting neutral at Paddock cost me some time as well. I'm sure some of the other riders had similar problems so it probably evens itself out during the weekends racing. Another couple of laps would have been nice on the last Powerbike race, and I may have been able to pass Peter, but he rode some strong races as did the other front runners so winning is not an easy task.

I'd like to do Thruxton and the last BSB race at Oulton but I need to get the gearbox fixed first so it all depends if there are enough funds left to go racing".
