Lowes takes BSS Cup for Co-ordit

Sam Lowes Crowned Supersport Cup Champion at Oulton Park 11-10-09

Co-ordit Performance Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Cup title contender, Sam Lowes, delivered the goods at the final round by taking all 25 points for the race win securing the 2009 crown as the season drew to a thrilling close at Oulton Park (11 October).

Returning from World Supersport duty, Lowes immediately reacquainted himself with the yellow liveried Co-ordit Honda, putting in a series of stunning laps to qualify in 10th position for the final 15 lap race of the Supersport season. With his closest Cup rivals back on the fifth and seventh rows and unable to match the Lincolnshire rider's pace over the weekend, the ball was firmly in Sam's court to make the title his own.

The packed grid tentatively jostled for position through the first few tricky corners of Old Hall and Cascades, with Sam losing a few places from his start position but knowing all he needed for the title was to finish ahead of Hipwell and Brown. At the close of lap one, Sam was in the driving seat, three places ahead on track of Robbie Brown.

As the race progressed, Lowes clung to the tails of the top ten riders in a respectable 12th, looking for extra points to better his 11th place standing in the main championship. Lady luck fell on his side as Robbie Brown crashed out at the Hizzy Chicane on lap 3, leaving Hipwell, his closest Cup rival, languishing outside of the top 20.

With his head down in full concentration, Sam completed the remaining laps unscathed to take the chequered flag and secure the Cup title - the first British Championship title for the Co-ordit Performance team. Fellow Honda rider, Steve Plater, triumphed over the race-long challenge from Billy McConnell to take the main championship title.

Lining up on the front row of the grid, Richard Cooper was full of renewed determination to claim third in the Metzeler National Superstock Championship. With John McGuinness suffering from injuries sustained at Darley Moor last weekend, his race fitness would undoubtedly falter leaving Cooper clear to claim the final step on the podium.

Another electrifying start had Cooper move into second behind race leader Brogan for the opening exchanges. Matching the Honda rider for pace, Cooper was handed another lifeline on lap 2 when Brogan was called for a Jump Start and subsequent ride through penalty. Second position in the championship was now in his grasp.

The front three riders had broken clear of the chasing pack, and as Brogan pulled into pitlane at the end of lap 5, Cooper settled in behind Hutchinson for the final showdown of the season.

However, things took a turn for the worse on lap 8 when Cooper fell out of contention as he crashed out at the Shell Oils hairpin. Resigned to watch the remaining 6 laps from the touchline, leaving Hutchinson to take the win by 12 seconds, the Co-ordit rider soon saw his grasp on fourth in the title chase slip to Jenkinson with a last lap overtake on Marsall Neill. A cruel blow to the Leicestershire based team, and scant reward for a season of hard work and promise.

Despite the disappointment, the Co-ordit Performance team can reflect on a strong season in both Superstock and Supersport, that has seen Cooper press the more experienced front runners all the way, claiming five podiums. Meanwhile, Sam Lowes has been electric all year, posting no fewer than 8 podiums and 7 race wins on his way to the 2009 title. A fantastic foundation has been laid for progression as the team now begins preparations for 2010.

Sam Lowes: "What a fantastic feeling to be crowned champion! After all our efforts, and a few set backs along the way, all of our hard work has paid off. I'm really happy to be able to repay the team with the championship and thank them for all of their support this year and believing in my ability to take the title. I'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has helped me this season."

Richard Cooper: "That was not how I intended to close out the season! I felt that we were in a very strong position this weekend to take at least third in the title race. We have had a great season but the team's hard work has not always been reflected with the results. I'd like to thank Pete Bradshaw, the Coordit team and all of my sponsors for their help and support this season, and will look to go one step further in 2010."

Pete Bradshaw: "We're disappointed with the final result in the Superstock championship, as it doesn't justify the effort that the team and Richard have put in this season. We have shown what a great team we are, stunned a few in the Superbike class, and the result with Sam winning the Supersport Cup will now carry us through to 2010. Our thanks go to our sponsors; Freeman Transport, Silkolene, Knox, Ross Aldridge, Print Plus and all of our valued racing partners."
